Varanasi is magical all year round, but the season decides whether your boat can reach the ghats, how crowded the aarti will be and how comfortable your walks through the old city feel.
October to March — the best season
Pleasant days (15–28 °C), misty winter sunrises and calm water for boat rides. This is also festival season:
- Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima, Oct/Nov) — every ghat lit with lakhs of diyas. Book hotels and boats months ahead.
- Ganga Mahotsav — music and dance on the ghats around Dev Deepawali.
- Mahashivratri (Feb/Mar) — huge queues at Kashi Vishwanath, an intense and devotional atmosphere.
December and January mornings can be foggy and cold (5–8 °C) — carry warm layers for the sunrise boat ride.
April to June — hot
Afternoons cross 40 °C. Plan temple visits and the boat ride at dawn, rest in the afternoon and come back to the ghats for the evening aarti. Hotel rates are lower.
July to September — monsoon
The Ganga rises and many lower ghats go under water. Boat rides can be suspended on high-water days and the aarti sometimes moves to rooftops. Sawan (July–August) brings big crowds of Kanwariyas to Kashi Vishwanath.
How many days?
Two full days cover the essentials — Ganga Aarti, a sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath darshan and Sarnath. Three days let you add Ramnagar Fort, BHU and the old-city food trail at an easy pace.
